CLMS Global Land Products

So far, the fall 2017 has been a fruitful season for the Global component of the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS), with the release of unprecedented products.

Indeed, from last September, the Global Land portfolio offers to their users a first version of:

A 1 km resolution version of the Water Bodies products was already offered by the service. The new 300 m version uses the same colorimetric transformation as the coarser products, but with reduced commission errors thanks to the use of the Maximum Water Extent product of the Joint Research Center of the European Commission (JRC).

It also includes water bodies detection and improved information on the masking and the probability of water body occurrence.

The Water Level products are entering the CLMS portfolio for the first time. Still in pre-operational development stages, they offer non-gridded data for both lakes and rivers, based on many years of satellite altimetry measurements.

For the first time, the service offers a Land Cover map with a 100 m resolution, covering the African continent for the year 2015, as a demonstration stage. The product consists of: (i) a discrete classification of 18 classes, (ii) 4 continuous vegetation cover fractions for bare, forest, grassland and shrub, as well as (iii) one layer describing the water bodies occurrence during the year.

A second version of the Land Cover product at 100m is under preparation, which will cover the full globe for the year 2015 and provides maps over Africa for the years 2016 and 2017.
