Smart specialisation: Commission announces new projects to fund interregional innovation partnerships

Smart Regions

On 18 July 2017, the European Commission presented new actions to further help regions invest in their niche areas of competitive strength. The objective is to generate innovative and resilient economies in the era of globalisation.

Among its proposals, the Commission announces a pilot project which will offer EU funding to interregional innovation partnerships. The project will aim to identify and scale up 'bankable' interregional projects that can create European value chains in priority sectors. These priority sectors include big data, as well as the bio-economy, energy and resource efficiency, connected mobility or advanced manufacturing.

A specific call for expression of interest will be launched towards European regions in September. It will offer new opportunities for innovative projects involving the Earth observation sector and enhancing cooperation between public authorities, businesses and researchers at regional level.
